My Personal Book Club

For years now, my dear friend Annie has been my go-to book advisor. She always reads the greatest novels, and always passes along the titles for me (and often my mom) to enjoy. A few weeks ago, I got a package in the mail containing this book. The author writes a gorgeous food blog, and demonstrates her same story-telling charm in her food memoir complete with dozens of recipes tucked in between chapters. I *devoured* this book - it was funny and sad (oh, yes, I cried... on the train to Amsterdam... Didz even took the book away from me until I stopped sobbing) and beautifully written and I didn't want it to end.

As much as I hated finishing it - I'm looking forward to going back through all the dog-eared pages I marked to try the recipes. I've already made her slow roasted tomatoes - which I combined with fresh basil, garlic, sea salt and olive oil and tossed with pasta. Didz and I both agreed it was the best pasta dish we've ever had.

You can find the recipe here - and although it takes half the day for them to roast, I think it's the best way to enjoy tomatoes in the off-season. Annie bookmarked a chocolate cake recipe in the book before sending it to me, so I might need to find an excuse to make that soon. And of course, I'll let you know how it goes... hopefully I'll be able to take a picture or two before we wolf it down.

(On a completely unrelated note: Did December sneak up on anyone else?? What happened to November and October?? Stay tuned for pictures of our first Christmas tree!)

  1. I just finished a similar book by Ruth Reichl, Tender at the Bone: Growing up at the Table. It's Ruth's memories of growing up in a home where her mom's cooking was terrible, even dangerous at times, but she herself becomes very passionate about food despite how she was raised. She also scatters recipes from people that influenced her love of cooking and food throughout the book. Good quick read.

  2. Ooooh! I remember my mama read that for her book club - I'll be sure to ask her to bring it to me when she comes to visit. Thanks for the suggestion!
